Chronic pain is ongoing or recurring pain that lasts beyond the usual healing time. It can exist alongside chronic illness, which can be medically defined as a long-lasting health condition that often persists for months, years, or a lifetime. Chronic illness and pain frequently interact: symptoms can intensify pain, while persistent pain can affect energy, mood, and daily functioning. The impacts of Chronic illness and pain are not restricted to the physical, but may also include the following:

  • Energy & Cognitive Function Persistent fatigue and low energy that interferes with daily routines; cognitive difficulties such as brain fog, impaired concentration, and memory problems.

  • Mood & Emotional Regulation Difficulty regulating mood, including anxiety, depression, irritability, or emotional numbness; uncertainty intolerance and catastrophic thinking about symptoms or flare-ups.

  • Grief & Identity Grief and loss related to changes in identity, roles, and future expectations; lowered self-worth and a loss of confidence in managing challenges.

  • Activity & Coping Patterns Struggles with pacing, overexertion, and perfectionism; maladaptive coping strategies such as denial, substance use, or excessive rest that can worsen symptoms.

  • Relationships & Social Connection Strained interpersonal relationships and social isolation; difficulty with assertiveness and setting boundaries around support requests.

  • Healthcare & Future Planning Anxiety around medical appointments and treatment plans; financial stress and difficulty planning for career or family goals due to unpredictability.
